Concert Review: Roger Hodgson (Supertramp)

RHodgson_loves_powerpopaholicI reported on his tour a few weeks ago, and I happen to catch Roger’s last NY area show at The Westbury Music Fair. There are few vocalists instantly recognizable from the first few bars of a song but Roger Hodgson is certainly one of that unique group. As the primary singer/songwriter of Supertramp, his voice is as unmistakable as the distinct keyboard sound of his early hits.

The venue “in the round” had fantastic acoustics and the audience loved the warm, intimate ambiance. The band was precise and production was lush. Special kudos to Aaron MacDonald who played all the horns and wind instruments with such note perfect skill. Every hit song got a standing ovation, from “Take The Long Way Home,” “Logical Song” and more, ending with a big sing-along for “Give A Little Bit” as an encore. Backstage, he was gracious and enthusiastic that I reported on his performance. Hope he comes back for an interview someday, it was quite a special night. Visit his website here.

  1. Being a Supertramp fan for years, I did not know what the members of the group looked like. To connect the voice to the face and then find out how human, personable, how much he reaches out to his fans while performing live, unbelievable!!! Cannot recommend enough, go, travel if you have to….. to experience Roger and his talented musicians for yourself!! He has to be announcing 2014 tour dates soon…..check out his website for updates!!!

  2. Roger Hodgson Live in an experience that you never forget. I have too reasons to recommend this show. First, (agree with Eleanor) He is the Voice of Supertramp: every day he is singing better and better…
His songs are all classics, as classics, we listen one and another again, and every time they say something new…
Roger is extremely kind, charismatic, with sense of humour, so far away from the “tipycal Rock Star”, he is simple and natural…
Roger and his band sounds powerful…
His sound is superb, almost celestial…
His fans, we build a true friendship around the world…
All the atmosphera around Roger is peacefully, in his show all people is living show in peace, enjoying, smiling in that moment.
Can you request something more about one show?

  3. I was at Roger’s Westbury show, too, and it was an unbelievable experience. I could have listened to him all night. It was as if Roger and the audience were one and we were all enjoying the show equally. What a voice! I now understand why fans and journalists say he is the Voice of Supertramp! Indeed! I can’t wait to see him again next year and will be regularly checking his Facebook page for tour updates – https://www.Facebook.com/RogerHodgson.
