Coby Brown and Adam Bones

Coby Brown “Stars & Curses”
While going through a cancer treatment Los Angeles singer-songwriter Coby Brown has been writing and recording these songs, which are full of melody on the opener “Daylight” but knowing his situation songs like “Madman” resonate with great lines like “Standing at the water’s edge/ landing on a window ledge/ I’m looking for some way to get back in.” But rather than get all depressing, Brown’s theme is a stubborn hope wrapped in a soulful indie shell. Songs are sparsely arranged, and thus more powerful. “Run Like I’m A River” is both catchy and mellow, this will appeal to fans of Josh Rouse, David Mead or Ryan Adams. The most pessimism here is the piano riff “Drop Down Dead” with it’s Lennon meets David Essex (“Rock On”) defiant rant about being in the hospital. Nothing here is fast tempo, but each song here is powerful, “Rise and Fall” being a Bono-like ballad that sounds a triumphant chorus of “up from the ashes..”. The album is a worthy and powerful statement, almost a religious experience without the religion.

Adam Bones “Feel For Tomorrow” EP
LA based rocker Adam Bones is traditional power pop artists with modern flair and youthful style. Fans of Bleu, Jet and Ok Go will find his debut EP fresh and compelling. His band has opened for several power pop groups including The Wellingtons, The Click Five and Bleu. Opening with the energetic “I Had You” he vocally reminds me of Elvis Presley’s rich baritone, and combined with those melodic guitar riffs, it’s a winner. He recently finished IPO in LA and after the country-pop of “Shouldn’t Love” I’m sure it was a great show. The gentle ballad “Feel For Tomorrow” is a deceptively simple, but an effective song that builds into an arena rock anthem styled after The Who. The buzzing hooks in “How Hard I Needed You” is another keeper along the lines of Lenny Kravitz, and I can’t wait for the full length album already. If you’re looking for a future power pop star — here he is.

Saturday EP Review Special FREE music downloads

I heard a few worthy EPs and emerging talent these past 2 weeks that deserves some attention from you Powerpopaholics out there. Here are some groups you might want to check out.

Princeton “Bloombury” EP

Twin brothers Jesse and Matt Kivel and Ben Usen are Princeton, a very Kinks-meets-Shins Chamber pop combo. The EP Bloomsbury, lyrically focuses upon a Victorian-era intellectuals. Portraits of Leonard Woolf, Lytton Strachey, Virginia Woolf and John Maynard Keynes are each presented in a different musical framework with lush orchestral arrangements. Just lovely pop gems perfect for summer.

The Very Most “Summer ” EP

After a very good debut album, The Very Most of Idaho have an EP of pure summer ear candy. After a Spring themed EP, this was the next logical step. Breezey, summer harmonies that recall the Beach Boys and The Davenports greet you on tracks like “The Motor-Vue Lights” and “You’re in Love With The Sun.” This is gently tailored pop touched by magic. You can even download the latter track for free! What’s not to like here?

Honey Brothers “Demonstration”

Combining banjo, ukulele, electric guitar, and three-part harmonies, their infectious rock sound touches on popular music from the Cars, Talking Heads to the Beach Boys, and further back into American folklore music of the 1920’s. The band has a pretty rich history and back catalog worth exploring too.

Don’t Be A Stranger “Perfect Problem” EP

Little EP from this Swedish pop outfit that sounds like The Cardigans met PJ Harvey in a dark alley somewhere. I have very little information on them, but the Swedish magazine Sydsvenskan.se loved them. Anyone know how to read Swedish? No? Well you’ll just have to download the tracks to see if you like them. Why not give it a shot?

David DiMuzio

“I Wanna Save The Last Koala Bear”
David is a straight up pop guy, trying to get noticed. He’s got a good voice, is a world champion juggler and know how to promote himself well. Currently singing on major cruise lines (Disney, Royal Caribbean) and working with Cirque Du Soleil, his music has plenty of passion and potential for great things. The album has plenty of high energy pop songs like “Lots of Girls Like You In Malibu” and “I’d Love You If…” that sound much better than those Jonah boys. A few power pop tunes poke through here like “Hey Julie” and “Broken In” and will definitely win you over.

Mothers Day Review Special

There are tons of albums out there that don’t quite make it onto my radar, sometimes because it’s not quite in the power pop genre, but that doesn’t mean it’s not good music. Here are some of noteworthy groups you might want to check out.

Jack Butler “Fit the Paradigm”

It turns out that Jack Butler isn’t a single guy but a group of funky Scottish musicians who play ska and post-punk pop. Similar to the Cure, Modest Mouse and Public Image Ltd. Highlights include “Are You A Hustler?” and “He Got No Game!”

Jesse Sprinkle “Surrounded by Lights”

Seattle native Jesse Sprinkle has a rich pop texture to his sound, similar to Michael Penn or Neil Finn. With carefully blended vocal performance and gentle guitar strum, this album flirts with darkness, but always brings enough hope in his melodies to keep things from slowing down.

Dubious Ranger “Uneasy truce at the Watering Hole”

This is a genre-hopping acid-trip of an album that goes all over the place, started by Alexander Eccles, with one foot in David Byrne-ville and the other in Ozomotly country. And throw in some classicial interludes while you’re at it. Highlights include “French Song” and “Shortcake”

The Small Cities “self titled EP”

Sobering little EP from this Minneapolis quartet that plays intricate pop songs along the lines of The Shins or Pedro The Lion. This group has rich sound that is full of exquisite sadness and style. Every track is decent and this is a band to watch out for in the future.

The Pomegrantes “Everybody, Come Outside”

Cincinnati’s Pomegranates have a smooth arty brand of indie pop. The sound is full of swirling guitars, cheerful keys, and hammering drums, the album tells the story of a boy’s swim across the ocean and abduction by a time traveller. The soft melodies lead us through dream-like soundscapes, and elegant guitar work make it a small treat for the ears. A good follow up to the debut album

Golden Bear EP and The Test Dream EP

Golden Bear “Everest” EP
Golden Bear was a well-received band that recently played SXSW and went on a tour of the East Coast. The band has a fresh sound with fuzz guitars and catchy songs structure with “Night Lights.” This is modern power pop you can dance to and it has a free form quality with varied instrumentation and just the right amount of distortion. You never quite know where a song is going to go, and that unpredictability makes Golden Bear lots of fun. Like a funky mix of Mother Hips and Apples In Stereo, this band doesn’t neatly fall into any genre category. Golden Bear has a compelling sound and tons of potential.

The Test Dream “Self Titled” EP
This Long Island band produces good sunny styled contemporary pop. Starting with “Open Wide” it’s a melodic mix that takes the best influences of The Beatles, Shins and Drake Bell. “Directing Traffic” remind me a bit of the recent Secret Sky, with it’s bouncy keyboards and light horns in the production. The group makes an effort to rock a bit more with “Someone” and it contrasts that with a Billy Joel lounge style vocal. The sugar content of  the vocals and chords on “Look for The Boy” go off the charts into Andrew Gold territory. An excellent start for this band, and I hope to hear more soon.

Welcome Home Walker, Green Go, Styles Make Fights

Sometimes I get e-mail from new bands who may not even have a full length or long EP out, but they are trying to get their name out. So let me introduce:

WELCOME HOME WALKER this is a cool three Piece from Portland, OR. If you dig The Rubinoos, Elvis Costello, Smokey Robinson or The Clash this band will rock your boat. They’ll also be playing the International Pop Overthrow Fest this summer. The “Don’t Let Me Go” EP is ready so give a listen. They have a swinging mix of fifties and eighties styles mashed up in the power pop blender, with energetic guitars, drums and vocals. Listen to “Don’t Let Me Go” for a jolt of pop punk excellence! Listen to them at MySpace

Canadian electro-disco-pop 5-piece GREEN GO‘s debut album ‘Borders’, a funky fret and synth driven dance with a bit of a prog flavor thrown in. This is unique stuff that will appeal to fans of Animal Collective, The Clash, and Joy Division. Listen to them at MySpace

STYLES MAKE FIGHTS is a new group from Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK and resembles an alcohol-soaked, pop band with rock and roll hearts on their sleeves, the music is full of loud guitars and pounding drums. They need more polish and a bit more production help, but they’re on the right track. These guys are unsigned so give a listen to them at MySpace
