No Tricks, Lots of Treats (Singles and EPs)

The Connection “(Its A) Monsters’ Holiday”
One of our favorite bands has a timely holiday single available, so give “The Monster Mash” a break and try this NEW classic.

The Zags are back! Portland artist David Ricardo delivers a monster single in “A World Away,” a really catchy gem! And it’s a FREE download!

Stay “Always Here”

Brilliant jangle psyche-pop from Minneapolis, Minnesota also delves in a few covers like The Bee Gees “Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You” and The Kinks “Where Have All The Good Times Gone.” Produced By Owen Morris and featuring guitarist Andy Bell on “You Know It’s Right.” Highly Recommended.

Walty “I’m in Love With Everything”

Philly band goes all over the place from New Wave, Disco, Hard Rock and everything in between. Variety is the spice of this EP.

Hidden in the vaults of Capricorn Records USA for over 50 years, we found lost ’60s band Stone Ridge only has a single available. Fortunately for us, we also have a tribute EP featuring Vinnie Zumo, Jose Estragos and Joe Ricardello (The Modulators) that really make that song shine. And no trick folks, it’s Power Popaholic’s treat; A FREE download for your goodie bag!

The Spinto Band “The Living Things”

Normally I don’t have time to post only videos on the home page anymore, and I just add them to the Power Popaholic video jukebox. But I thought this was so inventive and well done, I added it today. The Spinto Band, on top of creating some of the most adventurous pop music going, is well known for their incredible music videos and the new one for “The Living Things” won’t disappoint! Created by the talented animator Phil Davis, the video is a combination of hand drawn animation and pixilation. All of the roughly 2,000 drawings in the animation were created frame-by-frame by Davis over the course of 20 months. Can you spare three minutes to watch the beautiful results of almost two year’s worth of one man’s work? Sure you can.

I Can’t Believe It’s Not The Beatles: Rock Band

This is a bit of good natured fun by animator Harry Partridge for BBC. I especially like the Ringo-like voice over and Oasis “Spat Mode”. You can even download the spoof Oasis song in the video here called “Fags n Booze.”  All the bands mentioned have been accused in the music press at one point of being “a copy” of the Fab Four. It’s a common lazy critique by uneducated music snobs — when we all know these bands have more depth than that and the Beatlesque tag should be worn proudly, not viewed derisively. Otherwise… where are the Monkees in this spoof?

Murry Wilson, the cartoon?

Yup. An animated episode, from the life of Murry Wilson, the infamous father of the Beach Boys Wilson-brothers, by Peter Bagge. Lots of in-jokes for fans who read any Brian Wilson biography. Best lyric: “Oh we’ll have fun in the sun… or I’m gonna get my belt!”

The Scared Cows and the groovy guru

Maxwell Smart and Agent 99 meet the Groovy Guru (played by Larry Storch of F-Troop) and the psychedelic group known as the Sacred Cows. Apparently that dippy hippy rock and roll was meant to brainwash teens to “Kill, Kill, Kill” and “bump off a square.” Well, maybe El Goodo could use those costumes for their next show?
