September Singles, Freebies, and Eps: The Orion Experience, Danny Wilkerson, Canadian Invasion, Geoff Palmer, Bill DeMain, Rooftop Screamers, and more

It’s the World Premiere of The Orion Experience‘s new single “Moving” is a loving tribute to the 80’s legend Kate Bush. A favorite artist of lead singers Orion Simprini and Linda  XO, they do a killer version with sharp riffs and harmonies. More will be coming, but for now, check out last year’s rich tapestry of danceable pop Fever Dream EP.

Danny Wilkerson (Pengwins) comes up with a sweet love tune “Strawberry Sherry,” and a new album isn’t far behind. It’s been a long time since I’ve heard from the underrated Philly band Canadian Invasion, the new EP features re-mastered tracks from Songs for the Atco Ghost (2006) – it’s a FREEBIE, so pick it up. And Geoff Palmer is back with a tribute to the great Dee Dee Ramone by Standing in the Spotlight. Highlights include “Brooklyn Babe,” “Baby Doll”, and “Emergency” which are just a few gems off this fun EP.  Missing summer yet? This FREEBIE and massive treasure trove from Ice Cream Man Power Pop, Indian Summer is a perfect gift. Plus a few more singles for you; Bill DeMain sings about the “Lone Ranger” with swooning strings akin to Jeff Lynne. Finally, the Rooftop Screamers get the great Tim Smith (Jellyfish, The Lickerish Quartet) to sing about “The Great Unknown.”

Concert Review: Spyderpop Showcase ’19

The Bowery Electric in NYC was host to Spyderpop Records on Friday, Sept. 13, 2019. An array of talented artists came together for an excellent night of amazing live music. The evening started with girl band Slyboots as they introduced a new lead singer, Tiffany Lyons. Tiffany has a powerful voice and what followed was a selection of soulful pop, rock, and even a Stevie Nicks cover! This was followed by long-time favorite Lannie Flowers as he played selections off his new upcoming LP Home looking to hit the shelves in November.

This was followed by Danny Wilkerson (Pengwins) and songs from his self-titled LP which ranked #8 from my top power pop albums of 2018. The band really stepped up here, filling the room with layers of sound, and then for the finale, we had one of the most talented power pop artists ever, Bill Lloyd take the stage. Bill played from his LP, Playing The Long Game #6 ranked in my 2018 albums list. Plenty of guest musicians were in the audience and at the end of the night all the performers took to the stage with a rousing version of Elvis Costello’s “(What’s So Funny ’Bout) Peace, Love & Understanding.” Suprise guest Paul Collins joined the gang on stage at the end. Danny Wilkerson and Simon Love

Danny Wilkerson

Danny Wilkerson “Wilkerson”

Drummer Danny Wilkerson (Pengwins) had a dream. That was to make his solo album a definitive statement, so he brought in the big guns of power pop to help out. Produced by Bleu McAuley and Ducky Carlisle, mixing by David Spreng (Bob Dylan) and vocal support from Roger Joesph Manning Jr. (Jellyfish), Joe Sieders (The New Pornographers) and mastered at Abby Road by Miles Showell (Beatles, Stones, Who).

The opener “Everybody Loves To Love” is a richly crafted epic gem with layered guitars, sitars, and harmonies very much in Bleu’s wheelhouse. Its got all these great details, with a spacey synth ending before it roars to life with “Enough For Somebody,” a glossy sunshine pop song that showcases Wilkerson’s great range, full of key changes and handclaps. “Let It Go Tonight” is another sure-fire hit single. The remaining songs are all impressive, as Danny goes through each tune with care. Influences are very clear (ELO, Beatles, Tom Petty, Andrew Gold) but not derivative. Clearly inspired and the melodies are purely original. Not a dud in the block of ten songs. Makes my top ten list (it’s crowded this year!) for 2018, and highly recommended.

Simon Love

Simon Love “Sincerely, S. Love X”

Simon Love (The Loves) brings us not so gentle love ballads full of sharp acerbic wit and expletives. The melodic style is full of 60’s inspired touches that stands as a contrast to bold lyrics. “God Bless the Dick Who Let You Go,” sets the tone with soaring strings and horns. The Lou Reed-inspired “Ballad Of Simon Love” is a fun rock star theme, with a neat hand-clapping section.

The Beach Boys-like ode to “Joey Ramone” is a sincere gem that wears its heart on its sleeve. Another sweet tune you wouldn’t play for your mom, “I Fucking Love You” bounces along, and the Beatlesque “Stephen Timothy West” sounds like it fell of The Magical Mystery Tour Bus. It runs out of fresh musical ideas after the midpoint but recovers with the spritely “Not If I See You First.” If you liked the influences I mentioned here, check it out.
