Glad to bring you some new songs, as we close out July. First is a neat freebie, The Morning Line‘s collection of outtakes. The opener “Straight Lines” is a solid single, and the rest aren’t shabby either. Mo Troper‘s freebie is the grinding grungey single “Ballad of Big Nothing” in the best Posies tradition, with a bit too much texture. Voltz from Sheffield, UK gives us a bit o’ glam mixed with pop on “Glitterbomb.” German band Eddie Mooney & The Grave has an 80s-styled pop gem with the catchy “Telephones.” I was also impressed with this debut EP from Seattle’s BPM Collective; “Adelaide” hooked me right away, and “Mr. Congeniality” has fantastic chord changes. I so much missed the music of Andy Bopp, and his single “Camera” is worth the wait. The first song I ever heard from Michael Carpenter gets a remix treatment, and Sofa City Sweetheart does a sweet Brian Wilson cover. Vista Blue‘s Ramones-styled pop returns with an Olympic-themed freebie and Reno Bo rocks both “Count Your Karma,” and a Todd Rundgren cover. Quiet a nice mixtape we have here.

More 2020 releases I missed…
Zach Jones “Be Nice! (The Singles Collection, Vol. 1)”
Between October of 2019 and September of 2020 the talented singer/songwriter Zach Jones has teased us with some stellar singles, so it made sense for him to compile them at the end of the year into a single LP. The opener “Be Nice!” is a beautiful pastiche of classic influences (The Beatles, Beach Boys, and numerous Motown artists). It bursts with the hope of reconciliation (wow! Very timely.)
This is followed by a cover of the Brian Wilson late-70s classic “I’ll Bet He’s Nice.” Jones’s production work is solid, and “Jim & Jane” is a melodic study of a couple on different life trajectories. “Best Thing To Happen” is a light Buddy Holly styled gem and the jangling goodness of “Like The Tide” is a bit like early Neil Young. The ballads have a Broadway musical quality like “October’s Almost Over” and “Yesterday of No Return.” A great collection and highly recommended.
Reno Bo “You Can See It All From Here”
Reno Bo is another brilliant musician who is just too good to overlook, yet I ran of out time for a proper LP review in 2020. He opens the acapella prayer “Phantom Anthem” with some haunting multi-part harmonies. “Baby Blues” and “Second To Last” are slices of smooth guitar pop very much in the mold of Lindsey Buckingham.
He switches gears a bit with “Take Cover” as its 80s synth beat leads the rhythm. The blues jam “Houdini In Reverse” is also a nice change of pace, and the buzzing “Even A Stone” recalls classic Eric Clapton. The latter half of the album keeps this beautiful blues-rock sound around and “Time Again Tomorrow” is another highlight. While the album lacks uptempo tunes, every song is flawlessly performed. Highly Recommended.

John Lennon’s 80th Birthday would have been on October 9th, 2020. To celebrate, a number of artists have released tributes in his honor.
Various Artists “Jem Records Celebrates John Lennon”
Each band is given a pair of tunes, and this first-class tribute starts with the premiere Beatlesque band The Weeklings. They add a Bo Diddley styled rhythm to this unique arrangement of The Beatles “The Word” and flesh out the bare-bones Lennon demo “What’s The New Mary Jane?” NYC-based The Midnight Callers deliver some sweet harmonies on the acoustic “Child of Nature” and bluesy lead guitar on “Jealous Guy.”
The Grip Weeds are faithful to the spirit of “You Can’t Do That” and “Strawberry Fields Forever” and the depth of sound and crisp production are impressive. The Anderson Council’s Peter Horvath channels Lennon well on “I Found Out” with its swirling psychedelic reverb. Johnathan Pushkar and The Gold Needles also deliver the goods. Richard Barone’s speeds up the tempo in the lone mashup of “Revolution” and “Power To The People.” It all works and is Highly Recommended.

John Lennon “Gimme Some Truth”
This latest ‘greatest hits’ collection is likely the best sounding mix you’ve ever heard and really does do justice to John’s compositions. Remixed by Paul Hicks (who did Imagine – The Ultimate Collection), all 36 tracks were selected by Yoko and son Sean to tell John’s post-Beatles story and illustrate his many moods. All gift-wrapped in numerous deluxe packages (the big one has a commemorative book, stickers, postcards, and extensive liner notes.)
Lennon’s searing indictment of self-serving politicians and “narrow-minded hypocritics” is even more relevant today than it was over forty years ago. The selection of songs includes his most popular work giving them new life for generations to come. Highly Recommended.

Chicago’s Faux Co. is the brainchild of songwriter Ben Mackey. Originally from Santa Rosa, California, Mackey has been writing 60’s influenced indie pop songs for a decade. This NEW single “Prozac Spaceman” is an exclusive Power Popaholic premiere. The core line-up of Faux Co is Ben Mackey, Trevor Pritchet and Chris Lee. This single has some great Rickenbacker strums and the melody flows along a catchy shaker beat. I can’t wait for the album!

Irish power popper Conor Lumsden from The Number Ones is Music City and here he’s playing every instrument on this A-Side ‘Pretty Feelings’ which sound like a lost Lindsey Buckingham track! Awesome! We want more Conor!
Ryan Allen and his Extra Arms are back and this advance track is just the start of his next release. This is a fantastic rocking track that just makes me salivate for the next song. Scream along and play air guitar to this one!

San Francisco band The Bobbleheads, one of the most underrated of power pop bands, has a sweet holiday single for us. And this song is extra groovy as its also a name-your-price download.
Reno Bo is another amazing talent. He had one of the top albums of the year in 2015. This month he brings us his catchy “Smile Across The Universe” and a mono version is included with this single.
The JAC (aka Joe Algeri and friends) have a slightly somber take on the holiday since it’s clearly been another tough year for music lovers of the classic era of rock n’ roll – Tom Petty, Glen Campbell, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and the Young brothers, George and Malcolm.
