Melbourne’s beloved power poppers The Wellingtons return with ‘Baby Moon’, their first full-length in years, and it’s like they never left. Zac Anthony and Kate Goldby may be older, wiser, and busier with life, but their ear for glossy, sugar-rush melodies remains razor sharp. From the first track, it’s clear they’re still masters of the style—blending crunchy guitars, bright harmonies, and just the right dose of emotional heart. “Always Gonna Be That Girl,” a blast of jangling power chords and buoyant melodies that instantly feel familiar. It’s followed by “She Still Loves Me,” a track that could almost be mistaken for an outtake from Jellyfish’s ‘Spilt Milk.’ Few bands nail that kind of baroque-tinged power pop sheen as convincingly as The Wellingtons.

Kate Goldby takes the spotlight on “The Things I Did Before” and “Not Ready To Give Up” delivering a vocal performance that recalls The Bangles’ shimmering blend of strength and sweetness. Later on, the band turns up the volume with “I Won’t Turn Away,” a denser slice of fuzz-pop where the layered guitars push forward with more urgency. Honestly, not a dud or wasted note here. This is a can’t-miss return from one of Australia’s most consistently delightful bands, and it eassily makes my top ten album list this year. Super Highly Recommended.

Star Collector “Everything Must Go!”

Vancouver’s Star Collector are back to rock your world. Frontman/guitarist Vic Wayne and longtime bandmates Steve Monteith, Tony Kerr, and Adrian Buckley burst out of the gate with the title track, a punchy opener that sets the tone with enthusiasm and grit. Lyrically, the record leans heavily into solitude, nostalgia, and self-reflection — sometimes to the point of repetition — but the band keeps things compelling with good arrangements and a willingness to shift gears. “Shining Example” is closest to their traditional formula, while “Queen Bed” digs deeper, delivering a thought-provoking story about “bed rotting”.

“The Best Thing” stands out with its jangly guitars, handclaps, and undeniable melodic lift — easily the most infectious track here.  Another standout “Shakedown The Breakdown” snaps back with crunchy riffs and swagger, channeling a mix of The Who and Joe Walsh. While not every song hits it’s mark, it shows the band is willing to take risks while holding tight to the classic rock influences. Undeniably worthy of your attention, and music that deserves to be heard.

August Singles and Previews: Vibeke Saugestad Band, Marshall Crenshaw, Timmy Sean, The Wellingtons, Vegas With Randolph, The Photocopies


And after the heat waves, August has arrived. Norwegian power pop princess Vibeke Saugestad (Weld, The Yum Yums) is a multi-talented musician and she’s got a new EP coming up soon. This video is a teaser, and I can’t wait. Next, Marshall Crenshaw presents ‘From The Hellhole’ an artisanal selection of tunes recorded in his home studio. It sounds so good, and with the passing of Ozzy Osbourne, Timmy Sean has produced a tribute to the late Heavy Metal pioneer. I’m especially excited for the return of one of my favorite Aussie bands, The Wellingtons. “Always Gonna Be That Girl” proves the band is in fine form with this great hook-filled gem. Don’t forget Vegas With Randolph, as they have a career “best-of” collection coming up, and we hear a deep cut “New Leaf.” Finally, I’ve got a new freebie for you from The Photocopies, check out the jangling gem “Average Schmuck.” You would be quiet the schmuck to not get this EP. This is your last month to enjoy summer, so go outside!

The Wellingtons “End of The Summer”

The Wellingtons are back, and I consider them one of the best Australian power pop groups when it comes to consistency of over the past 14 years. The densely layered melodies and strong guitar riffs on “Not Getting What I Want” opens this excellent album, with the happiest statement ever about the disappointment of not being a “rock star” in the Bon Jovi tradition. “Over and Done With” has the sharp duel vocals of Zac and Kate and the familiar subject of breaking up. Kate goes lead on the retro girl-bop “Please Be Nice” and “Making Faces in The Mirror,” and Zac brings the soaring power chords to “No Way Could Fail,” both style approaches are unmistakably fresh.

Each tune is distinctive, even the acoustic strums of the title track, a lovelorn ballad that plays like a split-screen musical number. What is especially satisfying is that the song quality doesn’t let up on the album’s second half. “1963” is a jangling gem and my favorite here the sunshine pop “She Rides The Bus” will just linger in your head for days. This is a great album that deserves your full attention, as it makes my year-end top ten list for 2017. Long live The Wellingtons!

Cait Brennan “Third”

Cait Brennan returns with her crew (and producer Fernando Perdomo) with a soulful croon and creates less of a power pop album but more of a rock-soul combination. “Bad At Apologies” and “Stack Overflow” could’ve been done by Tina Turner back in the day, although the overdubbed backing vocals are a bit much for me. The album title is a nod to Big Star (and Cait recorded it at Ardent Studios in Memphis with the same equipment Alex Chilton and Chris Bell used for those iconic albums.) The wonderful “He Knows Too Much” is a big highlight here, full of power and emotion so as the voice-over says “treat her with respect.”

Lyrically Cait has improved considerably, as the sophisticated “A Hard Man To Love” is both retro and modern with a good hook in the chorus. The Prince-Bowie influences come up on “Caitebots Don’t Cry” and the Ziggy-like “Benedict Cumberbatch” (pronounced “Cumber-bitch.”) Some tunes are catchy gems like “Shake Away,” but the album’s second half is a bit shaky – and tries too hard. However, it ends well with the Elton-like ballad “Goodbye Missamerica.” Overall a worthy follow-up to Cait’s debut.

Duerte Sanchez is the alias of Californian songwriter Jared Lekites (Lunar Laugh) and here is a sweet little ballad that is a FREE download for you all.

Preoccupied Pipers do a nice cover of Guided By Voices “Now To War.” The band is a collective of California musicians like Ned Sykes, KC Bowman, and others. The band also has a slowed down version of Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy.” Both are FREE downloads. Check it out.

Powder Blue Tux is Barney Hurley from Samuel Purdey‘s new project. And if you love Steely Dan — you’ll flip for this. Jazz-pop that rides the coolness wave with ease. Great single here.


Popboomerang’s latest sampler “The Melbourne Divide” is chockful of great music for a mere $5. Guitar pop band Oscarlima, power pop genius Michael Carpenter, Bryan Estepa and The Wellingtons are featured. All will be featured in a show on July 9 at the Yarra Hotel. Not a bad track here, it’s a highly recommended peak at the music down under.

The Wellingtons “Hey Hey” EP
Once again Aussie Zac Anthony is back with a new The Wellingtons EP. “Devil In A Cardigan” starts us off with a warning about his clingy ex-girlfriend. It’s a pitch perfect song with a dense middle eight, designed to induce goosebumps. It’s easy to keep gushing over a band that made it to #2 in the top ten list last year. But the quality power pop just keeps coming, from the light bouncy “Hey, Hey” and IKE-like heavy guitar riffs of “Under The Power Of A Girl” both full of hooks and ending with “Another Drummer Down,” a casual ballad about losing a drummer to pick on, where he asks “Am I the problem?”  No Zac… not at all, now get a drummer and make another LP.

 

The Bolts “Fall” EP
Irvine, CA band dazzles with its debut EP, a combination of rock and pop that proves you can crank out guitar gems like “Walk Away” along the lines of Extreme and Collective Soul, but still have sunny harmonies on “The Truth” akin to Phantom Planet. Since 2007 the band has been winning local “battle of the bands” competitions, eventually leading them to earn the title of Orange County’s ‘Best Pop Artist’ from the OC Music Awards.

The bands three Farmer brothers (Addam, Heath and Austin) help make those harmonies shine on “This Can’t Be Real” and “We May Fall.” The Bolts have plenty of energy and compare well to The Stokes, Jet and The Killers. By all accounts they are a huge success as evidenced by a ton of commercials using their music. A full length is expected by 2013.
