Honeydogs frontman Adam Levy has been a visionary when it comes to melodic rock or alt. country with smart lyrical wordplay.

But tragedy can change everything, and three years ago Levy lost his young son Daniel to suicide. He’s chosen to speak publicly about this pain and Naubinway is his outlet to help start a conversation with his audience about mental illness, suicide and its aftermath.

Starting out with some acoustic songs, “Take It As It Comes” is a statement about helplessness felt, and the sophisticated folk finger-picking style “Potter’s Field” is a descriptive profile of his son’s struggle. However its not all grim, “Atoms Never Die” has a nice groove with its catchy bass rhythm. And the full production of “This Friend” gets profound as “hope is the wounded beast that should never be put out of its misery.” The pain of coping with grief is beautifully stated on the piano ballad “When Your Well Runs Dry” and poignant message to his son “How I Let You Down” continues the conversation.

The great thing about Naubinway is that even though it starts out slowly it explores elements of a life lived and being loved. Levy is in top form, with gorgeous ballad “Marigold” and the casual brilliance of “Handful of Sand.” But he brings us back into focus with the powerful title track, a brutally honest display. “Life goes on in spite of great tragedy,” he said. “So here I am.” Emotional and vivid descriptions of spreading his sons ashes across the water cap off one of the most heartbreaking albums I’ve ever heard.

Adam Levy moderated a panel, “Finding Harmony: Music & Mental Health,” at the University of Minnesota’s Coffman Memorial Union. This video presents a portion of Adam’s appearance that night, during which he describes his own struggles with mental health and the suicide of his son Daniel, a promising young artist. The presentation concludes with a rendition of the song, “Naubinway,”

A Fragile Tomorrow “Make Me Over”

The Kelly Brothers; Brendan, (lead guitar) Sean (lead vocals/guitar) and Dominic (drums) plus friend Shaun Rhoades (bass) are the players that make up A Fragile Tomorrow. The band is poised on the bleeding edge of power pop and the opening single “Make Me Over” swirls with heavy riffs over a melodic chorus backed by harmonies and thickly textured rhythms. It’s the sound of a band that is restless and not going to play it safe. “Tie Me Up” is a mid-tempo soul searching drama and lead singer Sean Kelly does a great job here. You also hear a some beautiful subtleties in the tight harmonies of “One Of Two, Two of Three” and the sweet composition of “Tell Me How To Feel” make these tracks big highlights.

Various light psychedelic touches are in the lush ballad “In My Mind” with its 12 string strum and orchestral majesty; reminded me a bit of 10cc or ELO. You hear numerous influences from REM to Cheap Trick on the layered “Hit Parade” and “Can’t You Hear Me.” The final track “One Way Ticket” with guests Joan Baez and The Indigo Girls, is just mesmerizing as both a tribute and a re-make. This is a densely packed album that deserves multiple listens and its highly recommended.

Marco Rea

Marco Rea “Wallpaper Music”

This is the first solo release of Marco Rea (The Wellgreen, Euros Childs, Linden). Born at the kitchen table in Cerasuolo, Italy the album has the melodic grace and simple production style that recall Paul McCartney’s first solo effort. After the shuffling instrumental of the title track, “Someone’s Picture” is a sweet piano melody that will stick in your head for days. “Time” is a like a Left Banke ballad with a gentle tempo and honest delivery; Marco even sounds a little like John Lennon in spots.

“Sunday” has a vaudeville piano, recorder solo and it is very much like a mid 60s novelty hit. The slowly building “To” is another winner, with its layered guitar melody, choral harmony and deep lyric; “One day you might look back, you might move on.”  Not every song approaches that level of Beatlesque greatness, but “When You Fall Down” and “Try” both have that Ringo styled beat. Most of the tracks on the albums second half are quite somber, and some classical piano instrumentals slow the albums momentum. Still, the impressive songs here make this digital only release highly recommended.

Smash Palace “Some Kind of Magic” EP

Steven & Brian Butler (the main force behind Smash Palace) continue to put out some of the most pristine rock songs, and they are joined by Fran Smith Jr. (bass) and David Uosikkinen (drums) from The Hooters, plus Wally Smith (keyboards) and fan favorite Cliff Hillis (guitar). What seems new here is a conscious effort to avoid sounding too retro.

The opener “My Mistake” is a contemporary rock song with Smash Palaces’ signature jangle rhythm. “Haddontown” has a California feel; like Crosby, Stills & Nash mixed with Tom Petty and its the standout single here. “Part of The Plan” has a great driving guitar that leads the lyric and the solo at the break is pretty sweet too. This is a short, but sweet EP without a stray note — its highly recommended for fans. Newbies might want to start here.

The Maureens

The Maureens “Bang The Drum”

The Maureens are a band from Utrecht, Netherlands and they make exciting and melodic alternative pop, but unlike last years debut the band takes a much softer approach on Bang The Drum. The band still has crisp clear harmonies and strong melodies when we start with “Heartbreak” and “Catch Me When I Fall” which recalls Teenage Fanclub or The Pearlfishers.

The slower “September” draws from early ’70s easy listening pop and the arena balladry of “Caroline” is similar to late-era Moody Blues. The softer songs on the albums latter half, while boasting solid musicianship didn’t hook me like the debut album did. But gems like “Bloom” will impress with the guitar and rich choral harmonies similar to Abba. Overall, this is a highly recommended listen and I hope to hear more from these talented artists.

The Deadbeat Poets “Hallelujah Anyway”

In what has to be one of the most enjoyable listens this year, The Deadbeat Poets return with a fresh guitar pop crunch on Hallelujah Anyway. Frank Secich and crew are in fine form with a visible enthusiasm that seemed to missing from some past efforts. They hit the ground running with the power pop of “In My Iron Lung,” a catchy fast tempo gem. The early Beatle influence is back with “Baby Doll,” a great little roots rocker with farfisa organ. The sixties psyche-pop mode goes into high gear with “The Psychedelic Gas Station,” as its got plenty of cowbell, effects and a tasty guitar solo.

The band also has a more diverse sound, as the modern mid-tempo “Getting Over You” written by lead guitarist Pete Drivere is a real treat with a nice vocal performance. Secich goes the full Cavern Club styled skiffle on the retro “Johnny Sincere” and the Kinks influenced “A Dark-Haired Girl in Piccadilly Circus” plays like a musical diary entry. Other recommended tracks include the Tom Pettyesque “There Ain’t No One But You” and the guitar frenzied “School For Dictators.” Overall a highly recommended return on Pop Detective Records!

The Junior League and Seth Timbs

The Junior League “Also Rans”

Joe Adragna (aka The Junior League) continues to produce excellent music year after year and this new album is no exception. The Junior League has more of a retro-sound to start with Also Rans, as the title track is a shimmering janglefest that’s a little like a jam between The Zombies and REM. And although there is lots of great power pop, its got plenty of stylistic variety.

The sound of producer Scott McCaughey’s (Minus 5) influence is pronounced on the mid-tempo gem “The Stars In Our Eyes.” Then the catchy “Before You Go” has a great hook that doesn’t let go and it leads to the sweet “Please (I Need You To Go)” with its bouncy tempo. We then shift to a modern expansive sound on “On/Off” including a synth piano added by Sloan’s Jay Ferguson, and this approach follows through on the slower “Broken and Mine.” Joe goes light (“Disappearing Act”) and heavy (“If its You”) and you’ll find not a single note of filler. Highly Recommended. Also Rans comes with a 5 song bonus disc and is scheduled for CD release on October 2, exclusively at Kool Kat Musik.

Seth Timbs

Seth Timbs “New Personal Record”

Seth Timbs (Fluid Ounces) has been quietly releasing albums of melodic magic over the last several years, and his latest “New Personal Record” is a testament to his resiliency. “Give Up On Your Dreams” is a brilliant piano melody that stands alongside the great Harry Nilsson’s work. On the rollicking “Uneasy Street” he pounds away on the keys and the strutting melody of “Fill It Up” shows Timbs at his most energetic.

“Cliche” is a piano bar ballad about the worn-out musician who was once a “hot prospect,” but the slow building drama of “Far Away From Here” is a brilliant heartbreak song of a wanted man sending his love away to shield her from the law. The guitar solo here is very moving and makes this one of my favorite on the album.

Seth doesn’t stay in the dumps too long, as “Ugly” is an awkward come-on that turns into a joyful dance, and a statement of self confidence. We end with the Flamenco tempo of “The Thing About Time” and I’m glad to offer this album to you as highly recommended.
